So when I decided I needed a spare trimmer and found it here on Amazon, I was very pleased indeed, EXCEPT that the reviews here made me nervous about mail-ordering it for sure. But in the end, this product seems no longer available anywhere locally, so I decided to "Prime" order it, and with overnight delivery to hopefully minimize the potential for shipping damage.<br /><br />So I ordered it Monday and (of course!) received it Tuesday and sure enough the box was caved-in quite a bit, but luckily the two (yes, only two!) pieces of packing tape "securing" either end were intact, so the end flaps were secure and there were no missing parts. But it's true...AMAZINGLY there is no packing material inside the box whatsover! Zero, zip, nada, none! My goodness, they could at least have wrapped the power head in a piece of bubble-wrap!!!???!!! Come-on, Amazon, have your warehouse guys open the box, wrap the engine, and *adequately* re-tape the thing and you will save yourselves and your customers a lot of grief! Oh, well, enough griping--despite this embarrassing packing situation I had no cracks or broken parts or anything; maybe overnight FedEx is the way to go indeed.<br /><br />Today I fired it-up and trimmed for a couple hours; excellent, this is just a wonderful machine and I'm sorry that Poulan has apparently decided to retire the design. But at least spare parts are still very readily available; it was even sold under the "Sears Craftsman" brand so lots of repair parts are available from many sources including of course our very favorite "store", Amazon.com! Being a 4-cycle engine, it does require oil. I'd strongly recommend this trimmer to anyone who has some serious (or minor) trimming to be done on a regular basis. It's a great all-around option. Right now it is strictly a string trimmer. Out of the box, I realized this thing is beefy. It is heavy! Walk away right now if you are looking for a lightweight trimmer.<br /><br />It does come with a small bottle of 2 cycle oil. Once I filled it with gas, the first start was slow to come. I discovered that the choking system is poorly designed (basically on/off). Starting is best handled by holding the throttle ever so slightly open. After about 45 minutes of use I burned through an entire tank of fuel.<br /><br />The tap string feeder works pretty good with .080 string. I tried the .095 string and it works ok. That said I decided on this Troy unit after skipping on another brand model that was significantly cheaper but had a history of starting issues. I decided to pay a little more for the Troy and not have to deal with starting problems.<br /><br />Assembly was very easy and the instruction manual was simple and easy to follow. I've only used this trimmer about 3 or 4 times so far, but it starts consistently if you follow the instructions. Cold, it takes about 5-6 light pulls, 5 under full choke and 1 under half choke. It has a spring loaded pull assist so you don't have to pull very hard. After use when the engine is still hot you need to let it idle for a minute or two before you shut it off since it is air cooled. I did not know this so first time trimmer buyers should keep this in mind.<br /><br />This model has good power and high rpm at full throttle and is able to cut thick 1/4" weeds without bogging down. Half throttle is enough for normal grass and weeds. The bump line release mechansim is nice and very convenient allowing you to release more line without having to manually grab the line holder.<br /><br />This model is kinda heavy for my liking but not too bad. Balance can be adjusted by moving the D handle up/down the shaft. The trimmer vibrates quite a bit too when it's idling which is kind of annoying since I did not expect this. I dont know if this is common with these types of trimmers or not. One important thing to note is that the guard doesn't completely protect you from debris. Same results with a fresh tank of gas and barely two hours on the engine. I wondered if it might be the carburetor adjustment, but I couldn't find anything other than the idle speed adjustment. I googled around a bit and discovered that this model has tamper-proof carb adjustment screws (i.e., they're there, but you'll never get a screwdriver on one). Someone suggested using the end of a blue plastic crimp terminal over the end of the headless screws. Bingo! I rummaged around in my toolbox, found one and ten minutes later, the pruner ran like it should have. Plenty of power--I cut some 6" oak branches with no trouble at all.
